Here we are just before leaving the car at the Sunrise Lakes Trailhead (elevation 8200 feet). Bear proof food canisters are required in Yosemite. We carry the lightest type canister, but even so, they are nearly three pounds empty. For a six day trip, they were both packed solid with food. When we left, Andra was carrying about 37lbs and I was right around 68lbs. Fortunately the packs get lighter everyday. (eat up is my motto!)
We've hiked two or three miles by this time and this is a view looking back towards the road. If you know what to look for, you can actually see the road. At the base of the granite slab and to the right of the tall tree in the middle, is highway 120.
Still in about the same spot where the prior photo was shot, Andra snapped my picture. We are currently climbing a series of switchbacks. This section of the trail represents most of our elevation gain to reach Sunrise Lakes. It is steep, but wide and safe.
