Here the birthday boy and his gal pause for a photo as they enjoy their lunch along the Tuolumne river.

We've now cut across HWY 120 and are camped near the Tuolumne River at the start of Lyell Canyon. Andra can't help but take a self-portrait by the fire. We've hiked about 31 miles. Tomorrow we will hike up Lyell Canyon and setup camp at the base of Donahue Pass. We'll remain there for two days! Rest in relaxation here we come!

Here Dave and I are setting up our counter balance to hang all the food that doesn't fit in our bear canisters. A bear canister will hold about 3 days of food for one person. For trips of this length it is impossible to fit everything in them. You can see half our food is already high in the tree. The second half is to the left of Dave's head. With a little help from me and the weight of the food up top, the second lot will be hoisted up to a height of over 12 feet. Both sets of food will then hang at about the same height with just a string coming down to retrieve it.

To be honest, it is true a bear could get your food if not properly stored on any given night. However, what will get your food every night without fail are squirrels, marmots and the like. Those buggers are everywhere and if you leave anything they can get to, it will get torn to pieces.
